Children are wired to communicate using verbal and nonverbal language from birth. Using language to understand and express ideas is the core way that children engage with the world. As children grow, they can understand and express themselves in more advanced ways. In this session, participants will learn how to analyze, unpack and use DC ELS Standard 6 – using language to express self – to intentionally plan meaningful experiences and lessons for young children. Participants will discuss the importance of language development from infancy through pre-K exit and explore how to use the DC ELS to ensure a rich early language environment is provided in classrooms.

This course addresses the following age band(s):

  • Early childhood - early (birth-36 months)
  • Early childhood - middle (36-60 months)
