Description:

This four-part series is designed to orient early childhood educators to the foundational content necessary for deeper study of equity, cultural responsiveness and the implications they have in early childhood education (ECE) environments. The series will allow ECE educators to examine their own biases or expectations toward children of diverse backgrounds. It will also offer an environment where educators can safely discuss and identify anti-bias solutions to support a culturally responsive learning environment for young children and their families.

During this module, participants will explore issues of human diversity that are broadly defined to include race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and ability. Participants will discuss identity and culture and reflect on their own cultural identity. They will also discuss equity and identify the difference between equity and equality. Learning will be applied through participant review and discussion of real-life scenarios that involve issues of equity in ECE. In this module, the following questions will be examined: How do we experience and understand diversity and difference? How do diversity and difference shape systems that affect individuals, families, children and society?

This course addresses the following age band(s):

  • Early childhood - early (birth-36 months)
  • Early childhood - middle (36-60 months)
  • Early childhood - late (5-8 years)
