In this two-part workshop, participants will explore how visual arts can enhance their early childhood classroom, deepen students’ understanding and support fall-time learning units about animals and the Earth through hand-on activities. The trainer will guide participants in using everyday materials, with an emphasis on recyclables, to design and create animals and their habitats. Participants will learn how visual arts can be used to assess students’ development in math, literacy and science/engineering standards. Be prepared to participate in the workshop by having materials handy to engage in creating during the session. There is no need to purchase anything; suitable materials that are already available to you in your home or classroom include:

  • Recyclables: small to medium cardboard boxes (e.g., cereal boxes, cracker boxes, tea boxes, cookie boxes), toilet paper and paper towel cores and plastic containers;
  • Tools: glue, tape, scissors, paper clips, crayons, markers, pastels and paints; and
  • Decorative materials: tissue, construction paper, magazines, junk mail, newspaper, string, ribbon, foil and pipe cleaners.

This training addresses the following age band(s):

  • Early childhood - early (birth-36 months)
