Description:

This interactive session will focus on how teaching the early phonics skills of decoding and encoding can be fun for teachers and students. Reading and writing are flip sides of the same coin. Decoding consists of sounding out and blending the letters of words and is an important skill that helps children become readers. Likewise, as children begin to write, they identify the sounds in a word and match each sound with a letter that they print. Inventive writing is the result of early encoding, going from the sounds of a word to letters. Becoming adept at decoding and encoding enables children to “break the code” of written language.

This course addresses the following age band(s):

  • Early childhood - middle (36-60 months)
